Andrea Huppert: Place as Muse
It was in 2008, after 5 years of living in her “country” home, that Andrea Huppert realized her work had become a response to place; the landscape, rocks, twigs, birds, river and sky. For many years Andrea explored the tension and harmonies between abstraction and realism in a variety of media and now was using these same presumed contradictions to fuel her creative response to her relationship with her surroundings. Rather than simply reproducing “life”, Andrea uses symbolic natural images among an opus of shapes, lines and color to try and convey the sensations that these images evoke. Andrea’s work often changes form as it progresses and somehow a painting of trees can turn into a waterfall, but if it’s a successful painting, she is thrilled.
Artist Biography
Andrea Huppert was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and currently makes art fulltime in her Baltimore County studio. She has studied painting at MICA, taken community college art courses as well as continued studies with a variety of professional artists and instructors.
Her early painting style was traditional realism rendered in oil but eventually she opted to explore watercolor and began exhibiting her work in 1984. During this period she was an active member of several watercolor societies, won numerous rewards and helped establish and run a co-operative gallery in Baltimore.
In 1996, watercolor led to mixed media as she began to destroy and re-purpose unresolved paintings and add layers of collage. These collages evolved into wall-hung dioramas that incorporated painted papers and fabrics, found objects, and small hand-built sculptures which she continued to explore until 2003.
After an extended hiatus, she resumed two-dimensional painting and exhibition of her acrylic, mixed media work. Since 2014, Andrea has been painting with encaustic and is still energized by the luminosity and versatility of this exciting medium. Andrea also worked as a muralist/decorative painter from 1995-2015.
