Celebrate the opening of the exhibit As Long As I Have Breath in My Body and hear from artists at this reception.
As Long As I Have Breath in My Body celebrates the 45th anniversary of IN PROCESS…, an African American women’s a cappella group that harnesses musical rhythms and harmonies born of slavery and cultivated during the Civil Rights era. The exhibition also highlights the artistry of The Village of African American Doll and Puppet Artists, a collective of visual storytellers who emerged during the Civil Rights and Black Arts Movements. These artists use their craft to chronicle the history, identity, and culture of their communities.
Through their contemporary interpretations of traditional art forms—including spirituals, freedom songs, dolls, puppets, and textiles—both groups explore their intertwined histories and the intersection of art, culture, and social activism that has flourished in Mid-Atlantic African American communities since the 20th
