A solo exhibition by Camila Leão
Gallery 194 I September 14 – October 31, 2024
Reception: October 10, 2024 6 – 8 pm
Leão presents a collection of artwork inspired by the natural world, particularly focusing on tropical landscapes, wildlife, and celestial elements. Through acrylic paintings, illustrations, and murals, Leão brings to life scenes that capture the essence of nature with a South American influence. Each piece offers viewers a glimpse into the beauty and diversity of our environment, encouraging the audience to appreciate the wonders of the world around us. This exhibition highlights the artist’s exploration of nature’s intricacies and invites viewers to reflect on their own connection to the natural world.
As a native from São Paulo, Brazil, the current state of Brazil’s rainforests and its global crisis directly relates to Leão’s inspiration and identity. Leão’s exhibition will showcase works of artivism (the connection of Art and activism) to highlight the tragic state and bring attention to the matter.
As of September 2024, Brazil’s rainforests—Pantanal, the Amazon, and Cerrado—are burning at an alarming rate. These fires are not just a national tragedy; they are a global crisis. The Amazon alone produces 20% of the world’s oxygen and plays a critical role in regulating the Earth’s climate. Yet, these ecosystems, home to countless species and indigenous communities, are being destroyed by illegal arson, driven by the expansion of cattle farming, agriculture, and illegal logging and mining. The loss of these forests is not only devastating to Brazil but also to the health of our entire planet. ALL EYES ON BRAZIL—we must act now to protect these vital ecosystems before it’s too late.
