Historically, marginalized communities are required to create opportunities for progression while decolonizing themselves from the patriarchal, supremacist’s tenant of scarcity. Non- Heteronormative Black life has been a revolution incubator against that practice by celebrating the abundance within those identities. Writers that meet at the intersections of Black, LGBTQ+, and Gender Expansive life sit at the center of those spaces; doing the work to help us celebrate, grieve, and resist. Black Writer’s Pride Week is a week-long celebration of literary Black life and the voice of Black, non-heteronormative conforming backgrounds.
“I believe that love is the single, true prosperity of any moment.”- June Jordan
For the inaugural year, our theme comes from revolutionary poet, June Jordan. “Love’s Prosperity” is a nod to Jordan’s statement citing how if it were not for her strong community and the ones she chooses to speak up for, she would not know what it means to love herself. This resilient process of softening her heart led to the exploration of the strength and abundance of love. She found a quality in herself that lives beyond us and transcends our true understanding.
Please join us June 16th-22nd at Charm City Books literacy, laughs, and love. Follow us @blackwriterspride to stay connected and get all the tea. Love long and prosper!
