Artists and creators in all media are invited to hear from authors Rebecca Giblin and Cory Doctorow on how to break through big media and big tech’s chokepoints for a fairer deal for publishers and audiences alike. All workers are weakened by the strength of dominant platforms like Amazon, YouTube, Spotify, etc., but the problem is especially well-illustrated by the plight of artists and creative workers. In their new book, Chokepoint Capitalism, Giblin and Doctorow explain the connections between the big media and big tech businesses, and offer tools to fight back, ranging from transparency rights to collective action and ownership, radical interoperability, contract terminations, job guarantees, and minimum wages for creative work.

Giblin and Doctorow will be interviewed about their book and research by Maximilian Alvarez, Editor-in-Chief of The Real News Network.

ASL interpretation and captioning will be provided, and the event will be recorded.

Sponsored in part by the 2023 MuseWeb Conference (in Washington, DC in April 2023).
