Bridget Z. Sullivan: Interstice

Interstice refers to a small opening or gap, such as the space between curtains that allows a stream of sunlight to enter. These observed interstices are moments that measure time, experience, and presence. In this body of work, Sullivan explores how small spaces contribute to and shape the larger whole.

Drawing inspiration from John Berger’s “Ways of Seeing,” which asserts that “we only see what we look at” and that “we never look at just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves,” Sullivan examines the connections between these gaps and our perception. Her work invites viewers to reflect on the act of seeing as an active, relational process, where small spaces and their interactions hold profound significance.

Bridget Z. Sullivan
Bridget Z. Sullivan is an artist, gallerist, and educator whose work delves deeply into the interstices of nature and life through a unique, meditative artistic process. Combining digital photography, drawing, and painting, Sullivan begins her creative journey with immersive walks in natural settings. During these walks, she captures hundreds of images, allowing the environment to reveal itself in a process of sustained observation and reflection.
Back in the studio, Sullivan meticulously reviews her photographs, selecting those that resonate with her exploration of life, death, and the human experience. She then transforms these images by layering them with hand-drawn elements, paint, and text, using materials such as graphite, pastel, and acrylic paint. This process creates a dynamic interplay between digital and handmade marks, where natural forms are abstracted and enriched by gestural strokes and emotive language.
Sullivan’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions regionally and nationally. A two-time participant in the National Park Service Artist in Residence Program, she has worked in Acadia National Park, Maine, and Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland. Additionally, she has received three Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist’s Grants, with her work appearing in AfterImage: Inklight and URHere Journal of Creative Geography.

Since 2012, Sullivan has served as president and curatorial director of Hamilton Arts Collective | Hamilton Gallery in Baltimore, where she continues to create, present, and support contemporary art.
