Join artist Ellen Lesperance for a free knitting workshop open to all ages and skill levels. Working alongside the artist, participants will create squares or strips, culminating in an un-patterned or anarchist sweater created by the group.
Works from Ellen Lesperance’s ongoing series, Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, are on view at the BMA in Ellen Lesperance: Velvet Fist. The works in the series are inspired by protest garments made and worn by separatist feminists while demonstrating against U.S. nuclear weapons storage in Berkshire, England, from 1981 to 2000. Lesperance was drawn to the artistry of the hand-made garments. Knit-in symbols such as rainbows, peace signs, battle axes, and celestial skies carried messages and even garments without apparent symbolism expressed meaning through patterns.
