We invite you to the closing reception on September 6th, 2024. The reception will be from 7-9 pm, with an Artist Talk at 8.
The Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts is pleased to host the exhibition (M)other. This solo show features original works by artist Courtney Adair Applequist. Through multiple mediums, Applequist contemplates one’s existence through a sacred and maternal lens. In charcoal, (M)other explores a laborious push-and-pull. The relationship between the artist and the canvas is distinctive; her process of creation is a visceral experience. With erasing, uncovering, and excavating the canvas, Applequist presents an intimate de-layering that happens in a manner antithetical to a simple additive process. The collection of works as a whole monumentalizes the experience of everyday connections, and explores the malleability of oneself- both imprinting and being imprinted on.
