Dirk Joseph is a multimedia artist and arts educator whose paintings and cast paper sculptures depict the sacred, mystical, and natural worlds. In the last decade he has developed a sculpting technique using wood and recycled paper fiber to create low relief wall sculptures. In 2016 Dirk founded String Theory Theater, a puppetry troupe in which he performs with his daughters. As a puppeteer and crankie artist, his puppetry formats include marionettes, hand and rod puppets, shadow puppets, crankies, large parade style puppets, video productions, and more.
Dirk was born in Trinidad, grew up in New York, and has been based in Baltimore since 2002. For the last 30 years he has worked as a visual artist, art teacher, performing artist (puppetry and theater), and a graphic designer.
