- L. Briscoe: About Paradise
Through his work E.L. Briscoe attempts to create an illustration of the manner in which he observes the world around him. He pulls from experiences of youth and juxtaposes those against what he has learned and experienced over the years. He is particularly fascinated by the way societal phenomena have been rationalized and communicated through entertainment media. Briscoe attempts to look back at the media he absorbed as a child and recreates those experiences as an adult in order to understand whether or not they have helped or hindered his understanding of the world around him. Some of these messages bring about a sense of calm perspective and others create more questions. Each successive work is the furthering of that message. Leaving room for more investigation.
- L. Briscoe was born in Charles County, MD, attended Charles County Public Schools and went on to attend Charles County Community College (now College of Southern MD), Morgan State University (BA, 1996) and Howard University (MFA, 1998). Briscoe is also a professor in Visual Art and the Coordinator of the Visual Arts Program in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD. and has artwork in the collections of the James E. Lewis Museum of Art, The David C. Driskell Center, the Jean and Robert Steele Collection of African American Prints and the African American Museum of Art, Dallas, TX.
