Morton Fine Art is pleased to present Eco Queer Creature Series, an exhibition of ink on paper drawings by Johannesburg-based transdisciplinary visual artist Hannelie Coetzee. On view from May 17 to June 24, 2025, at the gallery’s Washington, D.C. location (52 O St NW #302), this is Coetzee’s second solo show with Morton Fine Art. The series marks Coetzee’s return to drawing—a medium she revisited during the pandemic—through an eco-queer lens. Her electric, dynamic renderings of animals such as hyenas, wildebeests, zebras, warthogs, giraffes, and foxes explore queer behaviors in nature. Combining direct wildlife observation with research into zoomorphism and queer ecology, the work challenges human-centered perspectives and reimagines ways of being through the lens of animal life. Rooted in an environmentally focused, research-based practice, Coetzee’s drawings are both free-flowing and deliberate. They wordlessly express a key tenet of queer ecology: that queerness is not unnatural, but is reflected in the diverse behaviors of the natural world.
