This show is an explosion of color and form, the result of two years exploring the monoprint process. Monoprinting, a form of printmaking where the image can only be made once, is challenging and inventive. It differs from traditional printmaking due to the element of surprise in the unveiling of the print. Fletcher and Schwing produce very different results from what is essentially the same technique, making and breaking the rules as they go. Both artists are working with themes that have been prominent in their earlier work. Fletcher’s work embodies the heat of the inner city, the throbbing pulse of Black culture, and the influence of jazz music. Schwing’s work is symbolic and narrative, populated by her own characters and glyph images.
