Greg McLemore: The Creative Class
This series of watercolor portraits describes the life and spaces of the “creative class.” This term loosely designates artists, craftspeople, art professors and promoters, and others involved in the arts ecosystem. So far, each of the sitters in this group are people that I know well. All are artists and visionaries with ideas I am intrigued by. Rather than straightforward portraits, these paintings explore the personal symbolism of each of my sitters. It is necessary to spend some time in their homes/ spaces, to get a feeling for what is important to them, and to help me gain deeper insights into how they are affected by their spaces. I use this information to develop a narrative that deepens the understanding of their ideas and contributions.

Artist Biography
Greg McLemore is an artist and art educator. He has been living in the Baltimore area for about 18 years now. His art explores the tragic, mysterious, and comical aspects of life. The paintings range from detailed oil paintings of decaying urban landscapes to fantastical, surreal narratives, to watercolor portraits, and many things in between.
Greg earned an MFA at The University of Arizona in 2003 and a BFA at The University of North Carolina Asheville in 1999. He exhibits his work both regionally and nationally. Most recently he was published in New American Paintings, South (issue 142). He was named Artist of the Year in 2019 by Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY.
