What does it truly mean to be an American? Is it a matter of birthright, constitutional principles, a distinct way of life, or a shared set of values? From the nation’s founding to today, the definition of “American” has constantly evolved, often excluding many. Ultimately, individual identity and national belonging are deeply personal.
A panel of scholars and leaders from different walks of life will delve into these complex questions, exploring diverse perspectives and lived experiences of what it means to call oneself an American.

Panelists include:
- Winter BearKing, of the Lakota people, has served as Indigenous Outreach Coordinator and is the current Education Programs Specialist for the Maryland Center for History and Culture, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Trainer for the Association on American Indian Affairs.
- Dr. Herbert Brewer, an intellectual and cultural historian of the eighteenth and nineteenth century United States and the Atlantic World, is a professor in the Department of History, Geography, and Museum Studies at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.
