All materials provided! Learn the basics of oil painting from artist Beth-Ann Wilson.

About this Event

Join artist Beth-Ann Wilson in painting a simple still life. In art, a “still life” is subject matter that includes mostly inanimate objects which can be natural (such as food, flowers, bones, rocks, shells, etc.) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, shoes, pipes, etc.). An advantage of painting the still life is that it allows the artist freedom of experimentation with arrangement of elements in the composition because unlike a landscape or a figure the subject doesn’t change!

We’ll start by arranging our objects and lighting so we can have something interesting and fun to paint. I’ll have some props including fruit and flowers but feel free to bring your own items. Everyone will be given an 11″x14″ canvas, a small palette, professional grade oil paints, brushes, and Gamsol. We will sketch in the composition with thinned paint and then build up our paints over the course of the workshop to complete a finished piece.* Studio safety is top priority so aprons and gloves will be available for use and the door will be opened periodically for ventilation. Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.

This is an intermediate workshop. Some painting experience is recommended and it is strongly suggested that you be comfortable with drawing.

*the smell of wet oil paint bothers some folks. Paintings may take up to a week to dry to the touch. You are welcome to take your piece home that night or leave it at Night Owl Gallery to dry

Light refreshments will be provided! Feel free to BYOB, too
