Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890): His Life and His Art (lecture 1 of 2)
Joseph Cassar, professor of art, University of Maryland University College and the New York Times Knowledge Network

Vincent van Gogh is one of the most beloved artists of the modern period. Greatly misunderstood during his lifetime, our speaker, Joseph Cassar, will discuss his childhood and upbringing in a devout Christian family. It is surprising how many artworks Vincent produced in his short life; many works have still never been presented to the public. These lectures are the fruit of research carried out at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, revealing hundreds of drawings and new paintings. The series addresses drawings, portraits, self-portraits and landscapes with special reference to his letters and quotes.
