The Artist as a Subject: From the Renaissance to the Present

Aneta Georgievska-Shine, professor of art history, University of Maryland

Reception 10:30 – 11:00 am

One of the most popular sayings associated with the art of painting in the Renaissance is that “every painter paints himself.” This statement gains a very special value when applied to the genre of self-portraiture. In this lecture, we explore more fully the ways in which artists have fashioned themselves through their portraits in different historical periods.
