Join us for a listening session & discussion of Turmoil: the hour-long soundtrack of our newest exhibition, Theatre of Turmoil, composed by Zachary Konick.
Mr. Konick, in partnership with /m staff, will host this event. To begin, we will listen to the first half of the piece, then will take an intermission to discuss as a group. We will then listen to the second half of the piece, followed by a closing question & answer period. The entire event will span about 2 hours.
About Turmoil
Turmoil, a fixed sound installation for electronics, was composed by Zachary Konick in the Summer of 2024. The piece presents soundscapes of unrest, tragedy, and fear by underscoring social and political turbulence in a post 9/11 world. It also confronts the threat of peril from random tragic events, environmental degradation, and weapons of mass destruction. This hour-long work was composed by commission for the Mitchell Art Museum at St. John’s College and is an extension to the Theater of Turmoil exhibit.
Artist
Zachary Konick is a composer, percussionist, and hammered dulcimerist currently based in Annapolis, Maryland. He holds degrees in music composition from the University of California San Diego (PhD), the University of South Florida (MM), and the University of Maryland (BM). He has received notable performances by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the newEar Ensemble, the Quasar Saxophone Quartet, the Florida Orchestra, the JACK, Ethel, Spektral, and Mivos String Quartets, as well as solo performances by Lee Hinkle, Rebecca Lloyd Jones and Alice Weinreb. His music has been conducted under the baton of Oliver Knussen, Aleck Karis, Michael Francis and Steven Schick. Konick has studied and collaborated with some of today’s leading composers, including Roger Reynolds, Thomas DeLio, Chinary Ung, Lei Liang, Michelle Lou, Katharina Rosenberger, Baljinder Sekhon, and Paul Reller.
