Using John Work Garrett’s own 1939 talk “Natural History in America Before Audubon” as a starting point, this presentation will focus on some of the renowned natural history titles in the Evergreen Museum & Library. Keeping the historical context for the creation of natural history books in mind, we’ll look at several different interpretations via ornithology and botany, discuss methods of illustration as demonstrated by items in the collection, and look through some spectacular images from the pages of John Work Garrett’s books.
