Michael Chandler was born in Des Moines, Iowa, settled in New York City in the early 80’s, then divided his time between Garrison, New York and Vinalhaven, Maine, until his move to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2018.
The artist’s desire to design and build things has led him down an interesting and productive path. Chandler’s paintings, drawings and mixed media artwork have been widely exhibited over the years from Stephen Rosenberg Gallery (New York City), Springfield Art Museum (Springfield, MO), Galerie Philippe de Hesdin (Paris, FR), New Era Gallery (Vinalhaven, ME), to the Tweed Museum (Duluth, MN) and Western Carolina University (Cullowhee, NC).
As a custom wood worker, Chandler builds guitars and their cases, as well as the intricate framing devices for his own paintings. His projects for David Byrne, Roy Lichtenstein, architect Walter Chatham and musician Brian Eno led to Eno and Chandler subsequently collaborating on a two-man exhibition of sound and art at the Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston, MA).
Chandler’s work is in the permanent collections of several museums, and many private collections and galleries. He has frequently exhibited in Baltimore since the early 1990’s and returns now for the first time since the pandemic.
