Maryland Opera opens its seventh season with “Morte e Vita”   , a program of tragedy and passion that only the operas of Puccini can create.  The performance will be on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer on Charles Street in North Baltimore.  Tickets are $29-$81.
The program features the final acts from some of Puccini’s most beloved operas—Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly, and La Bohème—and will be presented fully staged and costumed in the acoustically and visually exquisite sanctuary at Church of the Redeemer.  A pre-concert lecture will be held in the Church’s parish hall from 6pm-6:30pm to discuss the impact of these immortal stories of death and life.  All are welcome at the lecture with the purchase of a ticket to the performance.
Joining us is an internationally acclaimed cast including sopranos Karen Vuong and Sarah Tucker, tenor John Pickle, and baritones Brian Major, Kevin Wetzel, and Jarrod Lee.  Continuing MO’s commitment to the future of opera, Isabel Marcus, an alumna of the Maryland Opera Summer Camp, MO’s training program for young singers, will be featured as well.
Stage and musical direction for all selections is by Maryland Opera’s Artistic Director James Harp, long known for excellence in operatic performances and musical outreach in the Mid-Atlantic area.
“The Operas of Puccini reach our hearts and souls perhaps more than any other composer,” said Harp.  “Generations of opera lovers attest to these immortal stories of life and death that are limned with music of superlative emotional power.  These three great finales represent profound tragedy and passion but also teach us about the power and indomitable resilience of our human spirit.  Join us for an evening of tears, revelation, and unending beauty.”
Tickets are $55-$81 and $29 for students with valid ID and are available on Maryland Opera’s website, marylandopera.org, or by calling 484-678-6041, and at the door on the day of the performance.  Seating is limited, though, so advance orders are recommended.  Free parking is available in the Church of the Redeemer parking lot adjacent to the building and across Melrose Avenue.
