Explore movement in a supportive environment during this six-week beginners dance workshop. Workshops take place every Saturday from May 17-June 21 (May 17, May 24, May 31, June 7, June 14, and June 21). Members of DMV Dance Collective will teach participants to express emotion through dance and devise pieces for a public performance based on a series of monologues chronicling the lives of enslaved individuals who found their way to the Sandy Spring community in Maryland taking place.
Participation in all six workshops is encouraged but not required. Participants will use the workshops to build and practice pieces for a final public performance on Saturday June 28. Any workshop participants may perform, but participating in the final performance is not required.
DMV Dance Collective is a dedicated group of young black and brown dancers working to inspire young people to explore their experiences and identities through movement, with an emphasis on afro-contemporary dance.
Devised pieces will be inspired by works by Sophonia Simms, a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and head of the Theatre Ministry at Olive Branch Community Church.
