Starting Thursday, January 27th, Motor House proudly presents Open Mic, Poetry Night, the new monthly poetry showcase, hosted by award-winning poet and Baltimore-native Meccamorphosis, happening every 4th Thursday of the month.

The Open Mic is designed to highlight linguistic veterans and emerging poets who have something to say. For Motor House, this Open Mic Platform is an opportunity to continue the work of cultivating new artists.

“An open mic is an artistic tool to create justice, equity and access in a community. Everyone gets their time to tell their story.” said Camille Kashaka, Executive Director of Motor House.

Accessibility and opportunity are pillars of the arts hub. So much so that they enlisted the talents of nationally acclaimed wordsmith Meccamorphosis to host the monthly event.

Mecca Verdell is a Baltimore-based poet and performer of Dewmore Baltimore. When she started her poetry career in 2016, Mecca won Brave New Voices, an international youth poetry slam. She has been a Radio show host for two Baltimore-based radio stations, interviewing nationally and locally known poets and writers. She has been dedicated to providing youth with safe spaces to express their creative voices with free open mics, showcases and competitions. Mecca is the former Youth Poet Ambassador of Baltimore (2017), opening performer for Aloe Blacc at the National Education Association conference in 2017, Southern Fried Poetry Slam winner of 2017 and 2018, Top 10 finalist of the Woman of the world poetry slam 2018, and top 3 finalist for Texas Grand Slam. Outside of competition, she has taught the importance of using poetry as tool for social justice and healing for middle schools, high schools and colleges.

“With the talents of Mecca and this platform, we should expect to hear Baltimore differently in 2022” smiled Kashaka.

Motor House is a creative crossroads rooted in the culture of Baltimore. We’re a non-profit arts hub, gallery, and performance space that encourages new visions, bold experiments, and emerging voices to celebrate the artistry of Baltimore
