Painted: Contemporary Realism in Maryland
Oil paint consists of pigment particles suspended in a slow-drying oil. Artists have been using this combination of pigment and oil to make paintings since the 15th century. Oil paint is still an important and seductive medium to artists today who use it to process their environments. Painted is an exhibition focusing on contemporary representational oil painting in Maryland. The artists were chosen based on their skill in capturing light, their color sensibilities, and use of texture in their work. Even with these common elements, the artists’ approaches vary. Each artist stands out because of their unique color palette, paint application, and subject matter. The artists in Painted pay homage to the long history of oil painters by their choice of medium and remain contemporary by portraying the world around them.
