Guzheng (Chinese zither) player and Grammy-nominated audio engineer Qi Yu of College Park, Md., will perform in March as part of Strathmore’s 2025 Artist in Residence (AIR) Class. In November 2024, Yu captivated audiences at the Fresh AIR Class of 2025 Preview Concert, offering a glimpse into her genre-bending artistry.

Trained in traditional and modern Chinese music, Yu blends world fusion, blues, Latin jazz, and electronic music. Her upcoming concerts and workshop at The Mansion at Strathmore highlight her innovative approach:

·“From Ancient to Contemporary: The Guzheng’s Development Over Time” Concert (March 12, 7:30 pm): A performance showcasing the Chinese string instrument’s traditional roots and modern-day versatility.

 

·“Exploring the Guzheng: A Comprehensive Guide to Its History, Styles, and Techniques” Workshop (March 19, 7:30 pm): A hands-on workshop delving into the instrument’s fascinating history and diverse playing styles.

 

· “Ancient Chinese Sound Meets the Western Voice” Concert (March 26, 7:30 pm): A performance that redefines the guzheng by pushing cultural boundaries and transforming perceptions of this timeless instrument.
