Recent Tendencies in Contemporary Art: The Geographies of Contemporary Art: Globalism, Mobility, and Site-Specificity

Where is contemporary art—and why does that matter? This lecture, the third in a three-part series, will begin with an overview of the emphatically global nature of contemporary art, and a look at the increasingly peripatetic practices of some leading artists, including Yoshitomo Nara and Zanele Muholi. But we will also think about the thematic and environmental costs of mobility, and look at several examples of intensely site-specific work, such as the 2020 series In Plain Sight. Finally, we will also consider several artistic examples that are centrally about the idea of motion, including Otobong Nkanga’s Carved to Flow. In short, then, this lecture will characterize the link between geography and contemporary art as multifaceted and complex.
