Bismark/Wilson Gallery Presents: Rodney Carroll: Maquettes and Marshes
An Intimate Exploration of Sculptural Innovation
October 12 – November 17, 2024
Bismark/Wilson Gallery is delighted to announce its upcoming solo exhibition, Rodney Carroll: Maquettes and Marshes. This compelling showcase will run from October 12 to November 17, 2024, and will feature a captivating selection of sculptural sketches and small-scale maquettes by renowned public artist Rodney Carroll.
In this exhibit, Carroll invites viewers into the conceptual world behind his celebrated public art pieces. Maquettes and Marshes bring together a series of steel and bronze geometric forms that serve as both preliminary studies and finished pieces. Each sculpture offers a glimpse into the intricate design process and storytelling inherent in Carroll’s larger public commissions.
Rodney Carroll, whose career spans over four decades, is known for his abstract and monumental sculptures that explore themes of human relationships, flexible landscapes, and civic identity. With numerous works featured in national and international parks, universities, and corporate collections, Carroll’s pieces are a testament to the dynamic intersection of art, engineering, and community engagement.
In his artist statement, Carroll reflects on the essence of public art: “Public art has a responsibility not only to fulfill an aesthetic value for the community, but also to consider site opportunities with a purpose of utility and public safety while subscribing to the highest methods of structural engineering. It offers a chance to represent and comment on civic and cultural norms.”
Carroll’s approach to public art is deeply collaborative, involving architects, clients, governments, and communities. Each project is a unique journey that begins with understanding the space, the needs of the community, and the project’s broader message. This exhibition captures the essence of that creative process through a selection of smaller works that embody the spirit and vision of his large-scale commissions.
The gallery is excited to showcase these intimate and detailed maquettes, which reveal the underlying narratives and design philosophies that have shaped Carroll’s distinguished career. From abstract forms to figurative representations, Maquettes and Marshes is a celebration of the diverse and innovative nature of contemporary public art.
