Serious Humor is a new monograph celebrating the bold, irreverent and unique perspective of photographer Michael Northrup. Spanning two decades of work; much of it previously unseen, the book reflects Northrup’s lifelong pursuit of what he calls “serious humor”. This limited-edition photobook features 65 images made between 1975 and 1995, including 32 color and 33 black-and-white photographs. The collection highlights Northrup’s gift for capturing the uncanny, the tender, and the quietly profound with a distinct visual language.

Known for his unflinching yet empathetic eye, Northrup has spent decades documenting the overlooked rhythms of American life. Serious Humor offers a distilled look at his evolving approach—marked by graphic clarity, poetic wit, and a relentless curiosity for irony. The book also showcases his pioneering use of light painting and strobe photography, and concludes with a candid conversation between Northrup and publisher Pete Voelker, who began his photographic journey as Northrup’s intern while studying in Baltimore. Their dialogue reflects on the enduring relevance of photography and the artist’s creative path.

Serious Humor is published by Spotz, an independent publisher dedicated to contemporary photography and visual storytelling.
A public launch event will feature Northrup signing copies of the book—offering a rare opportunity to meet and engage with one of photography’s most distinctive voices.
