ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Joseph Germershausen, an artist born in Baltimore, has worked in most styles and materials through the years. Most of his artwork tends toward the non-representational, although he attributes some images to specific moments or events, such as a piece of music or a passing glance at something briefly seen.

Germershausen’s focus in art-making lies in discovering what comes about in the process of creating. As a student at Towson, MICA and Brooklyn Museum Art School, as a Visual Arts high school teacher for over 20 years, as a Life Drawing Sessions monitor for many years at Creative Alliance, and as a long-time member of Baltimore’s Artists’ Housing, Inc. co-op, Germershausen has first-hand experience of the many perspectives of the creative process.

For more information about the artist, visit the Baker Awards website, or instagram @jwgerm or twitter @g_whiz9.

Marie-Paul Dendooven, born and raised in Brussels, Belgium, and Baltimore-based, paints instinctively and mostly from imagination and feeling. After studying at MICA, Schuler School of Fine Arts and BCC, she decided to let go.

By working from her core and letting through colors, textures and shapes, she represents an emotion or a memory with dreamlike or symbolic characters. To be true to her original and honest self, her abstractions come straight out of the subconscious.

Martha Garland was born in Ottawa, Canada and is currently based in Baltimore. Garland is a late-in-life, mostly self-taught artist who works in mixed-media encaustic. Her work can be described as surreal, whimsical, and slightly mysterious. For more information about her art, visit Instagram @waxpaperscissorsmg.
