Kim Sandara will teach a two to three hour puppetry workshop on October 25th. Kim will introduce her work and discuss the crossover between puppetry and animation. Throughout the workshop Kim will guide attendees through the process of creating puppets and how to shoot your own stop motion video. This workshop is suitable for families, individuals, teens, and includes materials which can be picked up from VisArts before the week of the workshop.

Kim Sandara is a queer, Laotian/Vietnamese, artist based in Northern Virginia. In 2016, she graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art, with a BFA in General Fine Arts. She has collaborated with the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ gift shop to create an event “Being” showcasing her work and guiding visitors to draw what they hear as she let a music playlist go on. At her Torpedo Factory summer 2019 Post-Grad Residency she created a stop motion animation about her parent’s immigration story intersecting her coming out story while also using the studio space as a shop to fund raise for local and national LGBTQ+ non profits empowering queer youth. In her 2020 Bresler Residency at VisArts, she has been focusing more on Lao identity work. She makes stream-of-consciousness paintings which interpret sounds into visuals and is working on a graphic novel on her coming out story. Her overall focus is to encourage empathy, wonder and self reflection.
