Galerie Myrtis is pleased to announce the inaugural solo exhibition, “The Textures of Us,” featuring esteemed photographer Devin Allen. The opening reception will occur Friday, October 25th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The opening reception is free and open to the public. We invite everyone to join us for this special event.
“The Textures of Us” is an early retrospective celebrating the release of Allen’s third book, “Devin Allen: Baltimore.” The exhibition delves into the artist’s impactful photojournalism in Baltimore, showcasing a wide range of scenes, from uprisings to moments of tranquility within the lives of Black citizens. The exhibit encompasses a diverse collection of works from the past decade of Allen’s career, featuring excerpts from his forthcoming book, previously unreleased images, video collages, and works from his mentees.
The accomplished photographer and author, a Baltimore native, adeptly captures the experiences of African Americans, encompassing their joys, struggles, and realities. Allen’s dynamic imagery often portrays scenes from his hometown, presenting an alternative narrative to the prevalent depictions of the city and its inhabitants in the media. His work encapsulates the complexity and nuances of Black life while advocating for social equity through documenting civil demonstrations.
Allen is widely known for his documentation of national protests against police brutality. His initial acclaim stemmed from his coverage of the Baltimore Uprising following Freddie Gray’s death in 2015. Time Magazine featured his photographs on their cover in 2015 and 2020, making him the third amateur photographer in history to receive such a distinction. Allen was recognized for his dedication to social justice when he received the Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowship in 2017 and 2023. His poignant images of pivotal protests and his captivating photographic documentation of Baltimore led to the publication of his works “A Beautiful Ghetto” and “No Justice, No Peace: From the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter.”
The exhibition will be held from October 25, 2024 – January 11, 2025 at Galerie Myrtis. Gallery hours: Wednesday – Saturday from 2:00 – 6:00 pm by appointment.
