In recent years, the South China Sea has become a hotspot for geopolitical disputes between several Southeast Asia countries. In this in-progress performance lecture that mixes together sound, text and movement, Bao Nguyen will unravel the historical/political forces at play in this conflict through the lens of water, whale and sand. The work aims to open up a new way of looking at the ocean and its inhabitants.

Bao Nguyen is an artist working with sound and performance. Through their work, they engage with specific locations, such as South China Sea or Quy Nhon, Vietnam (artist’s birthplace) and investigate the socio/political/natural influences entailed in these places. Through this sustained exploration, they want to arrive at a deeper understanding of place. They are currently pursuing their BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture at Maryland Institute of College of Arts, Maryland.
