Opening Reception for ULTRABLACK — A Solo Exhibition by Brian Tolbert
Mount Rainier, MD – Step into ULTRABLACK, a bold and visually arresting new exhibition by celebrated visual artist Brian Tolbert, premiering at Station 3510 on Saturday, July 12, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
ULTRABLACK is a vibrant declaration — a celebration of the beauty, complexity, and unapologetic brilliance of Black identity. In this powerful solo exhibition, Tolbert invites viewers into a dynamic visual world where Blackness is not explained, but honored, seen, and exalted. The series began as a personal exercise for Tolbert to reconnect with the joy of creating. It marks a pivotal shift—from using art as a vehicle for healing past wounds to creating from a place of joy, affirmation, and presence. “I put so much of my personal story and healing journey into my art. This time, I wanted to take a break and create purely out of joy,” Tolbert explains.
The opening reception promises an immersive evening of art, music, and community. Guests will enjoy light fare, curated sounds, and the opportunity to hear directly from the artist about the vision and process behind this powerful new body of work. This is a unique opportunity for collectors, supporters, and members of the press to engage with Tolbert in an intimate and inspiring setting.
The exhibition features 26 original pieces that embrace Blackness as a source of light, strength, and boundless creativity. “This process has been reinvigorating in so many ways. Creating from a place of freedom and letting the work speak for itself has been incredibly liberating. For the first time, I’m asking the audience to tell me what the works mean,” says Tolbert.

About the Artist:
Brian Tolbert is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Washington, DC known for portraiture, self-portraits, and surrealist illustrations on cardboard. His art centers around his experience as a Black man, incorporating historical, cultural and social nuances that shaped his understanding of Black identity in America.
