Dan Charnas recounts the life of the late hip-hop producer J Dilla.   Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey in Detroit was a transformative figure whose beats redefined the genre and procured a following that lauded him as one of the greatest musical minds of the past century.

Dan Charnas is an arts professor at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts – Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.   He is the author of several books, including The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop.
