On October 19, 1968, after winning the gold medal in the 200-meter dash, Tommie Smith and fellow American John Carlos, who won the bronze, took to the medalists’ podium and raised their gloved hands in a sign of protest against racial injustice.  Over fifty years later Tommie Smith will join us to reflect on his life and activism.   He will be joined in conversation by award-winning children’s author Derrick Barnes, and the book’s award-winning illustrator Dawud Anyabwile.

Tommie Smith is an Olympic gold medalist, who held several world records in track and field.

Derrick Barnes is the author of several children’s books including Crown, winner of the Newbery Honor, Caldecott Honor, and Coretta Scott King Author Honor.

Dawud Anyabwile is an Emmy Award-winning illustrator and comic artist.

This FREE event will be presented in-person and virtually.
