Join us for a special talk exploring the variety of traditions practiced as part of Día de los Muertos celebrations. Local artists Jessy Desantis, Alondra Flores, and Edgar Reyes will discuss their personal traditions and how they have taken shape and changed over time.

About the Artists:

Raised in a Nicaraguan household in Miami, FL and currently living in Baltimore, Jessy DeSantis is a self-taught, emerging artist creating meaningful, vibrant work. Her painting’s stark contrast of vibrant color and white space draws the viewer into her subjects. She is inspired by her connection to nature, family, and her Central American roots. Her paintings are more than just visually beautiful. They carry on their intention with a story to be told. She seeks to pass on these stories of heritage and truth with all of its complexities to her children and future generations.

Alondra Grisel Flores Merino es del hermoso Estado de México Nezahualcóyotl. Tiene 38 años, sus padres son originarios del bello estado de Guerrero Jilotepec. Está felizmente casada tiene dos hijos Angelique y Christopher. Tiene alrededor de cinco años formando parte del maravilloso grupo llamado Artesanas Mexicanas en la Alianza Creativa. Es maestra de enriquecimiento, enseñando baile de Zumba, y clases de ejercicio y deporte en su programa extraescolar. Comenzó hace seis años como entrenadora independiente del hermoso grupo de corredores de fitness creado y diseñado para las mujeres que quieren tener un mejor estilo de vida. Es coreógrafa del grupo juvenil folclórico y moderno “Juventud Latina” y también del grupo folclórico “Naciones Unidas”. Tiene unos dieciocho años ejerciendo la hermosa profesión de estilista. Baltimore multimedia artist Edgar Reyes creates work that reflects his personal experience as an undocumented youth in the United States. He nurtures the development of youth-driven, arts-based leadership initiatives that illustrate how art and design thinking can assist in self-expression and easing of cultural tensions. His practice highlights the beauty of being Mexican-American, yet questions his national and cultural traditions. Like other Chicano artists, he challenges social norms to bring forth awareness of what it means to be Latino.
