In the Crosshairs: Protecting Journalists in 2024
A Hopkins Bloomberg Center Event

Please join the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center and the Committee to Protect Journalistsfor a forum exploring how to protect journalists and free those wrongly imprisoned for simply doing their jobs. The panels will feature Committee to Protect Journalists CEO Jodie Ginsberg, Washington Post columnist Jason Rezaian, Dow Jones General Counsel Jason Conti, British Ambassador Dame Karen Pierce, Sara Cohen, Deputy Head of Mission (Foreign Policy & National Security) at the Canadian Embassy, former Washington Post video journalist Whitney Shefte, Committee to Protect Journalists Europe and Central Asia program coordinator Gulnoza Said, Bloomberg News National Security Reporter Nick Wadhams, and David Bowker, a WilmerHale attorney working to free Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

Every society needs a truthful examination of itself, a mirror of all that happens. As such, we strongly support a free press and know journalists must be able to do their jobs — wherever they are — safely and freely. Unfortunately, political and military conflicts present challenges for journalists on virtually every continent. Whether dying in war zones or becoming pawns of geopolitical battles, journalists now face near daily personal dangers and other barriers to practicing their profession.

The Committee to Protect Journalists and the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center are partnering to host an engaging forum to discuss what tools can be deployed to minimize dangers to journalists and highlight the important role that a free press plays in democracy.

With more than half the world’s population voting in elections in 2024 — and the world facing more conflict than it has at any time since World War II — we hope you will join us for this urgent and timely conversation.
