“Through a collection of emotive paintings, Lewis masterfully unveils a rich tapestry of Black male identity, drawn from the vibrant tapestry of the Baltimore community. Each brushstroke brings forth subjects who defy one-dimensional portrayals, inviting viewers to engage with the complexities and nuances of their experiences.
‘Moon in Scorpio’ serves as a platform for Lewis to challenge and reframe negative tropes associated with Black masculinity. With a keen eye for detail and a deep empathy for her subjects, she confronts stereotypes head-on, presenting multifaceted portrayals that transcend superficial labels. The exhibition compels viewers to move beyond preconceived notions and engage in a dialogue that celebrates the diversity and resilience of Black men.
Lewis’s work is a testament to the power of art to inspire introspection and empathy. Through her evocative paintings, she invites us to reconsider our perceptions of Black masculinity and to recognize the humanity and complexity of each individual.” – Dr. Myrtis Bedolla, Curator
