Mysterious encounters with light, water, space, and elemental material inform my making. In working with these mediums, Isenberg seeks to make the unnoticed—noticed and reimagine our place as humans in the world. This process uncovers a more collaborative and creative way to engage with Things that guide and respond to life. His practice culminates in minimal forms, installations, and actions that invoke contemplative participation and questioning, while excavating human connection to material, phenomena, and the Earth.

About the artists:

Monroe Isenberg, originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, completed his undergraduate studies, Cum Laude and with honors, in Sculpture and Psychology at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon (2013). After graduating and working as a fabricator and artist in Portland, he moved to Washington, D.C to pursue an MFA at the University of Maryland where he currently works as an instructor, graduate assistant, and artist. Monroe is the recipient of multiple awards, grants, and residencies including the International Outstanding Student Achievement Award recognized by International Sculpture Center, the Outstanding Student Award recognized by Mid South Sculpture Alliance, the Ann Bartsch Dunne Scholarship 1st place Award in sculpture, the Dean’s Fellowship at the University of Maryland, and the Tom Rooney Prize awarded by the Washington Sculpture Group. His artwork engages elemental form, balance, tension, light, and sound, is held in public and private collections and has been exhibited nationally.
