MoMA Collection: Interrelationship of Photography and Fine Arts in Modern Art

Sylvia Laudien-Meo, independent art historian

Since its recent reopening in October 2019, MoMA’s curators decided to mix up the works of their various departments throughout the galleries to open up some interesting

conversations between mediums. Photography and Fine Arts informed each other strongly since the mid 19th C, whether as inspiration or counterbalance, and some artists worked in both mediums. Soviet and Bauhaus artists introduced photo collages, and Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg were among the first to use silkscreen photography. The comparisons open interesting perspectives.
