Icons of American Animation | Opening Reception

McDaniel College and the Carroll County Arts Council are hosting “Icons of American Animation,” a major exhibition that emphasizes the artistic and cultural significance of American animation spanning the 20th century.

Free and open to the public, the exhibition runs Monday, Jan. 3-Saturday, March 12, and will be displayed concurrently at both McDaniel College’s Esther Prangley Rice Gallery, Peterson Hall, 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md., and the Carroll County Arts Council’s Tevis Gallery at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 West Main St., Westminster, Md. A public reception takes place Thursday, Jan. 27, from 5-7 p.m. at the Carroll County Arts Council and 5:30-7:30 p.m. at McDaniel College.

“Icons of American Animation” highlights animation’s cultural impact, artistic relevance, technological achievements, and historical moments in time through over 150 pieces of original art that represents more than 30 studios including Disney, Fleischer, Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera, UPA, MGM, Pixar and more.

According to Robert Lemieux, associate professor of communication and cinema at McDaniel and curator of the exhibition, the exhibit is one of the largest of its kind with an emphasis on notable characters, films, animators, and production studios associated with both film and television.

The exhibition showcases a broad range of art including animation cels, storyboards, model sheets, layout drawings, and concept art, in addition to artwork from 15 Academy Award winning films and pieces from 20 films listed in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. Materials are on loan from Mike and Jeanne Glad and the Glad Family Trust.

“This is the fourth collaborative exhibition I have been a part of at McDaniel, and it is, by far, the most comprehensive,” Lemieux said. “The artwork speaks to the rich history of one of the most popular and influential art forms in America.”

Exeter presents an exhibition of drawings, paintings, and sculptures by Elizabeth Flood and Bradley Milligan which investigate our country in flux. Both artists create their work as witness, reflecting on the landscape and Americana through a personal lens in a unique time of challenge and strife in our nation. The exhibition opens on the anniversary of the insurrection occurring on January 6, 2021, when a mob of supporters of President Donald Trump attacked the United States Capitol.

Both artists recently graduated from Boston University’s MFA program (Milligan ’21 and Flood ’19).

Home (Handle With Care) by Bria Sterling-Wilson | Opening Reception

Opening January 28, 2022:  Home (Handle with Care) is an exhibition of recent works at The Hooper House Gallery located at 100 East 23rd st Baltimore, MD 21218. This exhibition will showcase works by collagist Bria Sterling-Wilson, aka B. Sterling

Sterling-Wilson’s solo exhibition: Home (Handle with Care) explores the concept of home, beyond a roof and four walls. She examines the domicile sensation that takes over in any environment reminiscent of the feeling of home. Through her mixed-media collages, the artist contrasts the feeling of comfort and sustainability with the repercussions of destruction and/or invasion of the home.

This exhibition visually articulates stunning scenes of the Black experience through layers of found imagery. Sterling-Wilson’s visceral, fragmented compositions express the complexities prevalent in the black culture and society. Home (Handle with Care) creates beauty from ordinary images, confronting the struggles of Black America from the past to the present.

Bria Sterling-Wilson is a collage artist and photographer from Baltimore County. Her work has been featured in Black Collagists: The Book, by Teri Henderson, and the Full Circle gallery in Baltimore.

CAROL MILLER FROST Light Engagement + CHUL HYUN AHN Light Drawings | Opening Receptions

C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present Light Engagement, a solo exhibition featuring paintings by Carol Miller Frost that explore the spatial vagaries of lightness and darkness, evoking a presence of light that the viewer can feel.

Both abstract and playful, the paintings expand on the artist’s pastel drawings from time spent in Nova Scotia. Moved by the uncertainty and openness of bales of hay scattered across an expansive ground set against a backdrop of sea and sky, Carol Miller Frost’s paintings are a pure manifestation of spatial ambiguity rather than the landscape itself. Working with space, light, darkness, volume, and a minimal color palette, the bales dematerialize and become spheres illuminating the artist’s fascination with an openness that fluctuates, not deep and not shallow.

Frost’s paintings confront viewers with several forms of vigorous opposition. The spheres simultaneously become and dissolve as some are less active than others, allowing space to be both the subject and the object. In these instances, whiteness is both finite and infinite. Some paintings present a much bigger story as spheres seep off of the canvas’s edges, only yielding to white gallery walls, suggesting the continuation of space and limitless possibilities. This dynamic juxtaposition of the object and non-object creates an energetic forcefield, where light and space interplay.

 

 

C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present Light Drawings, a solo exhibition of works by Korean artist Chul Hyun Ahn where light, color, and illusion create immersive spaces that bridge the gap between the conscious and subconscious.

In Light Drawings, Ahn scratches into the back of the mirror layer to create line-based, abstract images instead of allowing the construction of lights themselves to form that image revealing his painterly hand. Mesmerizing, mysterious, and meditative elements draw viewers into space, while illusionistic environments provide a space for contemplation.

Light boxes glow with geometric forms and recede like portals into the distance urging the viewer to consider man’s boundless ability for physical and spiritual travel while exploiting notions of infinity and the poetics of emptiness. Ahn has translated geometric painting and the Zen meditation practice into an art of light, space, and technology, enticing the viewer to look deeply into his frame of environments.

Chul Hyun Ahn is an artist of international acclaim, with works in numerous public and private collections, including the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, the Hearst Foundation, Movado Group, the Jordan D. Schnitzer Family Foundation, Delaware Art Museum, Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art and the Palm Springs Art Museum. Ahn participated in Art Basel Hong Kong 2019 in collaboration with La Prairie, Switzerland. He lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland, and has been represented by C. Grimaldis Gallery since 2002.

Abell Open Space Mural | Call for Proposals

The Abell Improvement Association (AIA) was incorporated in 1973 as the official neighborhood association for the Abell Community. https://www.abellimprovement.org/

The Abell Open Space is a small city-owned and community-managed green space – roughly 10,000 square feet, situated along 32nd Street between Guilford Avenue and Abell Avenue. Features of the site include a swing set, picnic tables, naturalistic climbing logs, and a playhouse that is used by the local community. The Open Space also has a large grassy area used for recreation and a small memorial garden in the southwest corner. The location attracts neighbors from throughout northern Charles Village and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The Open Space is a neighborhood landmark. The site is a popular gathering point for artists, students, families, pet owners, walkers and just about anyone who finds themselves nearby. Many neighborhood events take place at or end up at the Open Space – parades, parties, garage sales, memorials, yard games and performances are just a few of the common uses of the space that is a resource for anyone in the community.

During the summer months the Abell Improvement Association shows movies at the Open Space on Friday evenings. The site is especially active in late afternoons and on Saturday mornings, when its location a block from the Waverly Farmers’ Market attracts many users from outside the neighborhood. The wall for this project is highly visible and it is expected that the proposed mural will reflect positively upon the many visitors to the space.

The AIA seeks proposals for a public art mural project for the 1-story brick north-facing wall along the south side of the 32nd Street Abell Open Space. The garages that form the brick wall are owned by a third party that has signed a memorandum of understanding to allow AIA to install a mural on the whole of 32nd Street side of the structure. Artists are invited to submit a proposal for this exciting opportunity to provide a highly visible, large-scale work of art.

 

 

ARTsites 2022 | Call for Artists and Sites

The Howard County Arts Council (HCAC) announces ARTsites 2022, a multi-site public art initiative. HCAC is looking for artists with large-scale sculpture that is fit for year-long outdoor display as well as publicly accessible outdoor areas in Howard County to display the sculpture.

About ARTsites: 

ARTsites 2022 is a year-long public art exhibit that will take place at up to twelve sites throughout Howard County from August 2022-July 2023. Sites and artwork will be selected from submissions by a panel of arts and public art professionals. The goal of ARTsites 2022 is to increase the community’s access to art through the placement of sculpture at sites throughout Howard County. The sculptures will serve as visual anchor points that will enhance and activate community spaces.

Call for Artists: 

Artists with public art experience may submit up to six existing works for consideration, or propose new work with proper concept drawings and/or models. Sculpture should have a strong visual impact and must be of a scale suitable for outdoor display; of sound design, free-standing, and suitable for public viewing; and able to withstand an outdoor, high-traffic, unmonitored environment with little or no maintenance. Selected artists will receive a grant of $3,000 for the temporary loan of the work, insurance, installation, and de-installation. There is no fee to enter.

Call for Sites: 

All community, commercial and public sites in Howard County are eligible to apply. Sites must be visible and accessible to the public. Sites should consider that public art should be placed where it will enhance and activate the space; where it will be highly visible; where it will create a place to congregate or be in a location that experiences a high amount of pedestrian traffic; and where it will not block windows, entranceways, etc. Preference will be given to sites that have, or are willing to install at their own expense, a concrete pad for the sculpture, though some sculpture may be appropriate for lawn sites.

The SE Center for Photography is looking for non-representational imagery, though it can be from found objects in nature, man made or figurative works. We’re seeking images that do not attempt to represent external reality, but seek to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and texture. Black-and-white or color, analog, digital or antique processes, photographers of all skill levels and locations are welcome.

Our juror for the Abstract Image is Adam Finkleston. Adam Finkelston is an artist, publisher, and educator based in Prairie Village, KS. Mr. Finkelston is also the owner, publisher and co-editor of the quarterly photography and printmaking magazine, The Hand Magazine: A Magazine For Reproduction-based Art. 

35-40 Selected images will hang in the SE Center’s main gallery space for approximately one month with the opportunity to be invited for a solo show at a later date. In addition, selected images are featured in the SE Center social media accounts (FB, IG, Twitter) and an archived, online slideshow. A video walkthrough of each exhibition is also featured and archived.

 

 

The Urban Arts Leadership Fellowship | Call for Applications

Grit Fund awards money to collaborative, artist-led projects—up to $10,000. We accept proposals that use the visual arts to create collaborative public-facing projects.

Artists and cultural organizers create vital connections within our communities. But it can be difficult to find funding to create, collaborate, and make an impact. Grit Fund makes arts funding accessible for everyone. We focus on projects that bring artists and community members together to explore a sense of place and shared space.

Grit Fund eligibility requirements

Collaborative projects led by visual and performing artists, cultural organizers, collectives, collaboratives, and/or artist-run spaces.

You must be independent (or unincorporated). In other words, you can’t be registered as a business or organization.

Only Baltimore City and Baltimore County based artists and organizers are eligible.

Your project must take place in Baltimore City or County and be accessible to the general public.

We support all kinds of visual-arts-based projects at any stage of development. Innovative ideas are welcome. These are the types of projects we’ve supported in the past:

The Art of Racing | Call for Entry

Established more than four decades ago, the partnership between the Preakness Stakes and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) continues with The Art of Racing, a community-wide call for entries of original, two-dimensional visual art that depicts the unique elements of thoroughbred racing and the Preakness Stakes. The winning artist will receive a $4,000 stipend and their artwork will be reproduced and available for sale during Preakness 147 with proceeds benefitting Park Heights Renaissance.

The Preakness and MICA have an illustrious history dating back to the 1970s, when then-MICA professor Raoul Middleman led his classes in painting murals of Pimlico Race Course. The seven murals Middleman created with his students, which live in perpetuity behind the course’s grandstand, provide an intimate look at a tradition defined by history and character.

The Art of Racing encourages Maryland artists to submit their own awe-inspiring portrayals of thoroughbred racing, the Preakness and/or Pimlico Race Course. Using the submission portal below, professional and amateur artists may submit their renderings and earn a chance at receiving a $4,000 stipend and two VIP passes to Preakness 147 on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

Beginning Monday, January 10, 2022, and continuing through Wednesday, March 2, 2022, submissions will be accepted. After which, submissions will be available for public viewing. The top 10 vote-getters will be entered into a final round that will be judged by esteemed members of the Baltimore community.
