The Many Faces of Abby Sangiamo: A Retrospective [...]

I visited the newly opened American Contemporary Gallery in Annapolis this weekend. The first exhibit is an eight person group show called ‘Emerging Forces’ and features Anne Schutte, AZ, Mary Hood, AZ, Sangram Majumdar, MD, Anne Mondro, MI, David Kinsey, FL, Billy Colbert, Wash, DC, Dan Dudrow, MD, and Morris Mitchell, FL.

Emerging Forces is an unusual grouping of artists from across America, and is heavily focused on painting and prints. Curator and gallery director John Bodkin did an unusual call for entry when he decided to open a gallery – he contacted dozens of art departments across the country, asking for personal recommendations for artists, from faculty members to personal acquaintences. This academic approach, rather than a commercial one, is a heartening move and expresses Bodkin’s intent – to exhibit “a stunning display of diversity and remarkable skill and talent.”
