Found Objects: New Beginnings

We stopped by Jarrett’s opening at SubBasement Studios at the beginning of the evening. I was excited about Jarrett’s newest paintings, mostly small and sepia toned, with a mixture of beautiful formal elements and menacing, dark subjects.

SBA Press Release: “There’s a Billie Holiday song called “Strange Fruit,”about the lynching of African Americans in the Deep South. In a drawing of the same title by Korea-born artist Jarrett Min Davis, the dead bodies hang from a tree like shadows of Billie’s voice. Davis’s work loves to poke at native cultures, teasing old images into new relationships for unexpected meanings.”
