MICA Presents Barry Nemett: Language of Landscape, Works From Italy Nov. 19 – Dec. 20 in Pinkard Gallery of Bunting Center, 1401 W. Mount Royal Ave.

Reception with the artist will take place Thursday, Nov. 19, 5-7 p.m.

This exhibition features artworks completed in Italy during the past four years. Although Nemett works directly from life, the places he draws and paints do not exist, at least not all at once. He makes them up as he goes, trying to make the unraveled story of each landscape he fabricates look true. Many of his Italian landscapes piece together multiple panels based on half a dozen or more sites. Nemett, along with MICA illustration faculty Warren Linn, will participate in MICA’s Sketchbook Celebration on Monday, Nov. 23 at noon in BBOX in The Gateway, 1601 W. Mount Royal Ave. Nemett will discuss the vital role drawing, in general, and working in sketchbooks, in particular, play in his art. He will read several poems he has written as examples of the way poetry functions as “written sketches” to flesh out ideas for his paintings. MICA is the final stop for Barry Nemett: Language of Landscape, Works From Italy, which has already traveled to George Mason University in Virginia; St. Andrew’s School in Delaware; Hood College in Maryland; Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey; Studio Arts Centers International (SACI) in Florence, Italy; ISA Gallery in Umbria, Italy; and Bates College, Museum of Art in Maine. A complementary exhibition, Barry Nemett: Paintings, Poems & Passages, was on view at Creative Alliance at The Patterson in Baltimore, and closed on Saturday, Oct. 24.
