Alma Roberts Explores Art, Hope and Legacy in Solo Exhibition | Reception + Artist Talk

Tribe 55+ presents Molding My Truth: The Gift of Legacy, a solo exhibition by Abstract Expressionist painter Alma Roberts at the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum, 300 Oella Avenue in Catonsville.

The exhibition opens to the public on November 22, 2026, with museum hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Roberts will greet visitors from 2 to 3 p.m. A reception and artist talk will take place December 5, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Roberts describes herself as an African American Abstract Expressionist painter, an Elder, an Activist and an Optimist. “My art is my medicine. It is my messenger. It is my legacy,” she says.

Through color, shape, movement and emotion, Roberts explores deeply personal experiences while maintaining an enduring sense of hope. Her work invites viewers to consider how art can build connections, communicate difficult truths and preserve a legacy for future generations. The featured painting, The Gift of Legacy (2024), combines acrylic and paper on a 36-by-36-inch canvas.

The exhibition is part of Tribe 55+’s year-long Literary and Visual Arts Residency, Molding My Truth: Shaping My Story. Curated by Aleem Allison, the residency’s 12 solo exhibitions accompany literary and visual arts workshops, community programming and a group exhibition.

Tribe 55+ is a collective of Black women literary and visual artists ages 55 and older, creating opportunities to share their art, stories, voices and legacies.
