GINA TIBBOTT: Tibbott Family Pet Burial Recovery

July 31 – August 9, 2008
Project 4 presents “Tibbott Family Pet Burial Recovery”, a solo exhibition featuring Gina Tibbott’s documentation of the archaeological dig she performed on the property of her childhood home in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. Porcelain casts of tiny skeletons that remain of these once loyal companions lay in recreated tombs as scientific photographic studies of the remnants, and of the various material ephemera found buried with the animals, line the walls. As a trained archaeological researcher herself, Tibbott presents these very personal fragments in a cold, detached manner as if this were a study of a civilization long passed. This relationship between the study of deceased cultures and the use of clay in the archaeological digs that uncover them is what Tibbott is interested in exploring: “In anticipation of some horrific disaster, I too work in clay with the intention of my indestructible pieces serving as a record of our own era, which I’m pretty confident is on its way out.” Tibbott presents to us the detritus of her existence, and her analysis relates the concepts of death and the transitory nature of a material culture to our civilization at large. As a self described “pop-culture-obsessed and overall paranoid person” Tibbott’s project displays tones that range from humorous and nostalgic to apocalyptic and morbid.
