Evan ‘Backseat’ Steck: SPOT ON THE MAP

Evan Steck ‘Backseat’ showcases unassuming cornerstones in “SPOT ON THE MAP” with Heather Grey Gallery at Currency Studio in the Station North Arts District.

Heather Grey Gallery is set to present “SPOT ON THE MAP,” an exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Evan Steck. On view from March 7, 2026, to April 11, 2026, the show features Steck’s awareness and attention to detail in his immediate surroundings.

Spot on the Map is a solo exhibition by Backseat. In this exhibition of mixed media collages, sculptures, and paintings, Backseat focuses on architecture and street corners that caught his attention while moving through the city. He frames the various buildings and everyday spaces as spots shaped by movement, memory, and time. The work explores the relationship between structures and their surroundings, sometimes pushing just beyond reality into something slightly surreal. Familiar facades and overlooked spaces become scenes the viewer can step into. Rather than simply showing Cityscapes, Backseat invites you to become part of the moment and reconsider the spaces you pass every day. While the works feature common structures and sometimes abandoned spaces, Evan invites the viewer to become part of the narrative captured in the scene, creating a unique experience for Baltimore residents who can follow the visual documentation by being familiar with the natural flow of the city.

Spot on the Map will contain between 20 to 25 pieces, including sculptures. The collection is in progress and projected to be finalized by March 2026. There are currently three mixed media collages made on wood panels (ranging in size) and two collages on stretched canvas. Ten of the pieces are projected to be on wood panel and five on canvas, subject to change. In addition to the completed works, there will be acrylic paintings and more mixed media collages, and an estimated six to eight sculptures.

All 2D works will be wall-hanging pieces, and sculptures will be displayed on pedestals, with one or more projected to be a wall-hanging piece. All of the pieces with architecture will have maps with pins below them marking where on the map they are located.
