Sondheim 2026 Art Prize Finalists: Award Ceremony

This year’s Janet & Walter Sondheim Art Prize Finalists Exhibition showcases the work of the five finalists—Thea Canlas, Leigh Davis, Brandon Donahue-Shipp, Curran Hatleberg, Danni O’Brien. The prestigious competition awards a $30,000 fellowship to assist in furthering the career of a visual artist or visual artist collaborators living and working in the greater Baltimore region. At this award ceremony and reception, be among the first to celebrate the 2026 winner and mingle with members of Baltimore’s arts community.
The 21st annual Janet & Walter Sondheim Art Prize Finalists Exhibition is co-hosted and presented in conjunction with Create Baltimore, on view at the Walters from June 25 through September 13 in Level 2 of Hackerman House at One West Mount Vernon Place.
FEMME is a contemporary art fair that puts women at the center — as artists, leaders, and economic forces. Launching in Washington, DC on Women’s Equality Day, FEMME brings together artists from across the country with collectors, brands, civic leaders, and the public for conversation, commerce, and cultural momentum.
Created by USAN USAN and Our Daughters’ Futures Fund, FEMME is designed to do more than showcase work. It is built to move resources, visibility, and opportunity directly to women artists, with 100% of artwork sales going to the artists themselves.

Baltimore’s biggest DIY music festival is back for it’s third year! Subscape is a 3 day, 3 stage, 60+ band celebration of the subversive elements fueling Baltimore’s bleeding-edge underground. Like Baltimore’s previous “Scapes” (Ratscape, Whartscape, Scape Scape, and Mix Tape), Subscape is a DIY, all-volunteer effort to uplift local artists and musicians.
THE DIFFERENCE? THIS FESTIVAL IS COMPLETELY FREE TO ATTEND!
The festival runs August 28th through August 30th at Current Space and Le Mondo.

Lecture: Monica Bravo | Beyond Origins, Across Borders: Modernist Photography in Mexico

Mexico City of the 1920s and ‘30s was a vibrant cosmopolitan artistic center, drawing modernists from all over the world, including photographers from the United States. Histories of Mexican modernist photography often paradoxically begin with the Californian Edward Weston and Italian-born Tina Modotti, and the photographs they made in 1920s Mexico. Scholars assert these artists’ influence on Manuel Álvarez Bravo, who became Mexico’s pre-eminent photographer of the twentieth century. In turn, examples of Álvarez Bravo’s surrealist work circulated through exhibitions and journals, both at home and across borders, to influence another generation of artists. Rather than insist on photographic firsts and reify lineage, this talk considers the conditions that made Mexican audiences receptive to the modernist photographic aesthetic in the first place. It also examines the cultural revolution that inspired new photographic practices to develop within Mexico. In so doing, speaker Monica Bravo demonstrates the intermedial construction of Mexico’s revolution in modernist photography, beyond origins and across borders. The lecture will be followed by a book signing of, “Greater American Camera: Making Modernism in Mexico,” which will be available for purchase in the AAM Store.

Kicking off an exhibition season dedicated to textile art, Woven Threads examines how these Maryland artists use textile as their primary medium. While many people are familiar with the art of quilting, textile art encompasses numerous forms and approaches. Kornett’s fiber pieces tend to be more figurative and Sperry’s more abstract, but both artists tell compelling stories through their contemporary art. Virginia Center for the Creative Arts Residencies

The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) provides time and space for national and international writers, visual artists, and composers of talent and promise to bring forth their finest works, because the arts are vital, diversity is a strength, and creativity is essential.
Selected artists come to VCCA’s Mt. San Angelo in Amherst, Virginia or the Moulin à Nef in Auvillar, France for intense periods of creative work, free from the distractions of day-to-day life. During residencies lasting anywhere from a week to two months, VCCA Fellows enjoy private studios, private bedrooms, and meals. Whether sequestered in the rolling foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains or on the banks of the Garonne River in Southwest France, VCCA Fellows can work in concentrated solitude, then re-energize in the company of other artists.
VCCA Fellows are selected by peer review on the basis of professional achievement or promise of achievement in their respective fields. Panelists for each discipline and genre undergo periodic review and rotate regularly to ensure that VCCA admission decisions are guided by high caliber artists who represent a diversity of styles and tastes.

Vox Populi is now accepting submissions for the fifth anniversary of our annual juried fundraiser, Wood Nickel: A $99 Exhibition, from now until September 27, 2026 at 11:59 PM.
We invite artists living within 90 miles of Philadelphia to donate artwork measuring exactly 8 x 10 inches to be shown and sold at Vox Populi from December 4–20, 2026. All proceeds go directly toward supporting Vox Populi’s programming and operations.
Wood Nickel: A $99 Exhibition is an anti-auction that levels the playing field for artists and collectors alike. All artworks are the same size, all priced at $99, and artist names are revealed only after purchase.
Participating artists will be featured in the exhibition alongside local and national contributors, included on Vox Populi’s website and social media, and receive a free drink ticket to the preview event on December 2, 2026, 6–8 PM. You’ll also have the chance to connect directly with local collectors and supporters of independent art.
