The relationship between Black Americans and U.S. art museums has historically been fraught and hard-won. This talk considers the advocacy and scholarship that Black curators from the 1970s onward have brought to the wider art community and its histories. Our research and oral history project led to the current book Black Curators Matter: Conversations on Art and Change (Getty 2026).
