Timothy App: Recent Paintings at Goya Contemporary

Reception: Wednesday, September 9 from 6 to 8pm

Sept 9 – Oct 24, 2015

Goya Contemporary Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by Contemporary American artist Timothy App (B. 1947 Akron, OH), whose works are in numerous private and public collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox in NY, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, The Tucson Museum of Art, AZ, among others.

Timothy App attended Kent State University in Ohio, where he received a BFA degree in painting in 1970. He continued his study of painting at Tyler School of Art of Temple University and in 1974 received an MFA. During his thirty-five years of teaching, he has taught at Pomona College in California, the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and since 1990 at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. With many one-person and group exhibitions since 1970, he has shown his abstract paintings regionally, nationally and abroad including in Poland and Japan. App is a recipient of a NEA fellowship in painting, as well as an individual artist’s grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. Twice he has received the Trustee’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at MICA, and has been nominated for the Richard C. Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship. In addition to painting and teaching, App has written on the work of other artists, lectured on his own work, and curated exhibitions.

The exhibition, Timothy App: Recent Paintings, will feature seven new large paintings authored by the artist, who was featured in a one-person, mid-career retrospective exhibition at the Katzen Museum of Washington DC in April of 2013.

These paintings continue the artist’s complex exploration of geometric abstraction in paint. While preparing for his 45-year survey exhibition, App’s new works started to share vernacularism with his preceding movements, evolved in fresh and relevant ways. These works are powerful and assert visual tension through color and shape, revealing the artist’s concise and thoughtful understanding of the nature of painting.

The exhibition brings together various aspects of the artist’s laborious practice, demonstrating his stature as one of the region’s most important living abstract painters.

Zoë Charlton and Tim Doud : ally at Randall Scott Projects
Saturday, September 12: 6-8 pm

September 12 – October 10

RandallScottProjects
216 West Read, West Baltimore, Maryland 21201

Zoë Charlton and Tim Doud’s respective practices are largely figurative. Their work in this exhibition employs allied strategies and materials in which the observed figure is absent, but nonetheless grounds the work.

Charlton playfully associates surrogates for the body, collected images of cultural artifacts and their politic, and scrapbooking embellishments. She uses collaged elements and stickers for their humor. They also work as a visual shorthand to a commodity politic read off image. The images are dense with particular meanings, but even out of context, they bring the shadow of their histories.

Formally, Doud’s paintings present as abstractions. However, these conceptual abstractions address consumerism, of both fashion and high modernist and faux-action painting, economic and social identities, and the absurd mixing of cultural signs. Branding serves as backdrop to a broader discussion of how commodity signifies.

In ally, Charlton and Doud employ a bricolage aesthetic as they go culturally drifting, borrowing images in an economy of meaning outside their original cultural reference.
